The mission of The Christopher Joseph Concha Foundation is to provide support and education to parents with premature children, to raise awareness to the general public about premature births, and to support research into premature related illnesses.

  Medications for Eye Infections

    Erythromycin   

     Eye ointment to prevent eye infection; antibiotic for bacterial infection.

    Silver Nitrate

    Eye drops to prevent eye infection at birth. Not commonly used

    Sodium Sulfacetamide

    Eye drops to treat eye infection.

    Medications for Fungal Infections

 

    Amphotericin B

    Used to treat a fungal infection.

    Clotrimazole    

    A cream used to treat fungal infection of the skin.

    Fluconazole         

    Used to treat a fungal infection.

    Nystatin 

    Used to treat a fungal infection of the mouth or on the skin.

     Medications for Pain, Sedation and Relaxers

 

    Acetaminophen (Tylenol)  

    Used to treat pain or fever.

    Chloral hydrate      

    Used for sedation; makes baby more relaxed.

    Fentanyl  

    Narcotic used for sedation, to treat pain and possibly for anesthesia.

    Ibuprofen (Motrin)   

     Used to treat pain and Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

    Lorazepam (Ativan)       

     Used to treat seizures and used for sedation.

    Midazolam  

    Used to sedate or relax the baby.

    Morphine       

    Used for pain or cause sedation.

    Pancuronium (Pavulon)    

    Used to relax muscles, prevents movement, temporarily paralyzes.

    Phenobarbital     

    Used to treat seizures or to relax the baby; used to prevent IVH.

    Vecuronium   

    Used to relax muscles, prevents movement, temporarily paralyzes.

    Versed (Midazolam)

    A commonly used sedative to calm babies who are extremely agitated or who need to undergo a procedure requiring him/her to lie still.

    Medications for Patent Ductus Arteriousus (PDA) or IVH

 

    Ibuprofen 

    Used to treat pain and Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

    Indomethacin     

    Used to treat Patent Ductus Arteriosus, causes ductus to narrow; used to prevent IVH.

    Phenobarbital   

    Used to treat seizures or to relax the baby; used to prevent IVH.

  Medications Used as Preventatives

    Cimetidine    

     Used to treat or prevent stomach irritation or bleeding.

    Dexamethasone   

    A steroid used to treat or prevent BPD.

    Heparin   

    Added to IV fluids to prevent IV from clotting.

    Palivizumab (Synagis

    Used to prevent Respiratory Syncytial Virus.

    Ranitidine (Zantac)          

    Used to treat or prevent stomach ulcers or bleeding; makes the stomach less acid.

    Silver Nitrate    

      Eye drops to prevent eye infection at birth.

    Vitamin K         

      Given after birth to prevent bleeding.

     Medications for Respiratory Distress

 

    Albuterol (Ventolin)

       Used to dilates the airways in the lungs.

    Cromolyn        

       Used to dilates the airways in the lungs.

    Floent  

      A steroid that reduces swelling of the airways in the lungs.

    Vanceril    

     A steroid that reduces swelling of the airways in the lungs.

    Medications for Seizures

 

    Lorazepam 

       Used to treat seizures and used for sedation.

    Phenobarbital      

      An anticonvulsant medication used to treat seizures or to relax the baby; used to prevent IVH.

    Phenytoin        

     Used to treat seizures.

   Miscellaneous Medications

    Acyclovir   

        Used to treat Herpes virus infection.

    Electrolytes

     Basic elements in the blood that must be maintained in a certain balance such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and magnesium.

    Epinephrine

    A powerful heart stimulant that is used to treat cardiac failure and low blood pressure.

    Epoetin alfa (Erythropoietin

     Stimulates the body to make more red blood cells; used to treat anemia.

    Ferrous Sulfate  

    Iron supplement.

    Glucagon   

     Used to help make glucaose.

    Insulin       

      Lowers blood sugar.

    Metoclopramide    

     Used to speed up stomach emptying.

    Naloxone   

      Used to undo the action of narcotics.

    Nitric Oxide  

    An inhaled gas used to relax the blood vessels leading to the lungs.

    Steroids  

     Has many different applications.  Commonly used to decrease inflammation in the lungs and can be used to raise blood pressure. 

    Surfactant    

     Used to treat Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

    Zidovudine (AZT)      

     Treat HIV (AIDS virus) infection.
